Driving up to the Jetty, the earthwork by Robert Smithson seems small from a distance. However, this once submerged artifact is 1,500 feet long! Although the artwork hasn’t been touched by the pink waters of the Salt Lake due to droughts that started in 2002, it has become more accessible by foot and feels like an extraterrestrial landscape.

Migrating past the Jetty, the pink haze becomes thicker as we wandered towards the receding shores of the lake. A spattering of people and an occasional dog moved towards the threshold of crystal and liquid. In the distance, old wooden piers remain from an industrial past centered around salt, marking where the water once span.⠀
